DESCRIPTION:Program at 1:00 pm\nPresenter: Dennis M. Kratz\, Phd\nDennis M. Kratz is the Ignacy and Celina Rockover Professor of Humanities and Director\nof the Center for Asian Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas\, where he served as\nDean of the School of Arts and Humanities from 1997-2019. His scholarship and\nteaching focuses on the reception and transformation of ideas\, concepts and practices\ninherited from Greek and Roman Antiquity.\nProgram\nThis lecture explores the mutually beneficial relationship of Medicine and the Humanities\nin Western Culture. It begins with the birth of three interconnected fields of inquiry –\nscience\, medicine and philosophy – in Greek Antiquity. It then examines the continuing\nbenefits to Humanity of their marriage and the dangerous implications of their separation.\nThe three Greek words are philotechnia (love of the craft)\, philosophia (love of wisdom)\nand philanthropia (love of humankind). Indeed\, this Triad of Affection – for practical\nknowledge\, a meaningful life\, and other people – serves as a model for every human\nendeavor.
