SUMMARY:Gun Violence\, Structural Racism\, and Healing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Brian Williams\, a renowned advocate for change\, as he delves into the urgent and timely topics of gun violence\, systemic racism\, and inequity. Driven by his personal experiences and professional expertise\, Dr. Williams will shed light on the disproportionate impact of gun violence on marginalized communities\, while sharing his remarkable journey and the transformative influence of his time in the Air Force. \nDr. Brian Williams is an Air Force Veteran\, trauma surgeon\, and gun safety advocate. After graduating from the United States Air Force Academy (Class of ‘91)\, he served six years on active duty as an aeronautical engineer. Inspired to continue his service through medicine\, he earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and two fellowships\, in trauma surgery and surgical critical care\, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. In 2010\, Dr. Williams joined the faculty at UT Southwestern Medical School and served on the staff  at Parkland Hospital\, a safety-net hospital where he committed to serve the underserved. He has also served as a professor of trauma and acute care surgery at the University of Chicago. \nOn July 7\, 2016\, Dr. Williams was the trauma surgeon on call when seven police officers\, wounded by a sniper targeting policemen at a peaceful protest in downtown Dallas\, were transferred to Parkland Hospital. Dr. Williams led the team who cared for those officers\, and the deaths of three critically wounded who died on his watch led Dr. Williams to seek service outside of the hospital. He served as the Chair of the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board\, working to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the community. He later served as the Dallas County Special Advisor for Health Equity during the pandemic. And in 2022\, while serving as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation health policy fellow at the National Academy of Medicine\, he worked with Democratic leaders to help craft and pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act\, the most significant gun safety legislation in nearly three decades. \nDr. Williams lives in East Dallas with his wife of seventeen years and their twelve-year-old daughter. His memoir\, The Bodies Keep Coming: Dispatches from a Black Trauma Surgeon on Racism\, Violence\, and How We Heal\, will be released September 26\, 2023. \nThe program will begin with a Reception at 6pm\, Dinner at 6:30\, and Program at 7:30. SUMMARY:Ethics at the beginning and end of life; a dialogue about how we decide what’s right.
DESCRIPTION:We are so pleased to have Dr. Robert Fine speak on the topic End of Life Care. We thank Dr. Marvin Stone for inviting Dr. Fine. This will be an excellent and informative evening. \nDr. Fine is a graduate of UT Austin (BA\, summa cum laude\, English) and UT Southwestern. He is a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies. He has completed board certification in internal medicine\, geriatrics and palliative medicine\, and is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Fine is the founder of both Clinical Ethics (1985) and Supportive Palliative Care (2004) services at BSWH. The palliative medicine programs under his leadership have been nationally recognized for excellence twice by the American Hospital Association. He has previously served on the National Quality Forum Committee on Palliative and End of Life Care\, the Ethics Committee of AAHPM\, the Steering Committee on Palliative Care for the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC)\, and he co-chaired the national corporate ethics committee for VITAS hospice. In 1999 he served as the lead physician author of the Texas Advance Directives Act and has worked closely with the TMA\, THA and others to maintain and improve the Act since that time. He has provided well over 2000 bedside clinical ethics consults\, provided clinical ethics expertise to numerous health care organizations beyond BSWH\, and has spearheaded development of the North Texas Mass Critical Care (pandemic triage) guidelines which have formed the basis of guidelines by many organizations across Texas. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management and publishes and lectures nationally on topics related to both Clinical Ethics and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Fine currently serves as the Clinical Director of the Office of Clinical Ethics and Palliative Care for Baylor Scott and White Health. DESCRIPTION:Please join us to hear fellow DCMSA member\, journalist\, and entrepreneur\, Candace “Candy” Evans.  One of the nation’s leading real estate reporters\, Candy is the founder and publisher of a growing platform of real estate-focused news website verticals: her signature CandysDirt.com\, SecondShelters.com\, and MidlandDirt.com.  Candy is “in the know” within the Dallas real estate world like none other\, having\, for example\, scooped former president George W. Bush’s Dallas home purchase in 2008 while on staff at D Magazine.  More recently\, she featured the Aldredge house in her January 5th\, 2023 newsletter\, depicting beautifully how the Aldredge House is a Dallas treasure and summarizing our history and unique significance.  Candy loves history and is on the Board of Preservation Dallas.  She chaired a home tour for DCMSA\, netting more than $115\,000\, one of the most successful in our history.  On a separate\, but entertaining\, note\, Candy was featured in “Daughters of the Sexual Revolution: The Untold Story of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” produced by Dana Adam Shapiro\, based on the book she wrote in 1982. \nCandy is the North Texas real estate editor for Forbes.com. Her verticals have won countless awards\, including Best Blog by the venerable National Association of Real Estate Editors\, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious journalism associations. Candy holds an active Texas real estate license. She is on the Board of Directors of Braemar Hotels & Resorts (BHR). As a volunteer\, Candy was President of the Dallas USA Film Festival in 2015 and remains on the board. \nShe has been involved with the Dallas Arboretum\, the Yellow Rose Gala\, Paws Cause\, Cattle Barons\, and Presby Partners. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Goran Klintmalm\nDr. Goran Klintmalm is Emeritus Chief of the Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute at Baylor University Medical Center. HE came to Baylor in 1984 to begin a multi-organ transplant program. The program performed its first liver transplant in December 1984 and has performed over 4\,960 liver transplants and over 6\,000 kidney transplants to date. He is the author of 500 peer-reviewed and 100 non-peer-reviewed publications\, editor of 45 textbook chapters and 250 published abstracts. Together with Dr. Ronald Busuttil\, he published the textbook “Transplantation of the Liver\,” now in its 3rd edition\, which is the standard textbook in liver transplantation worldwide. \nScott McCartney\nGiven wide access to the liver transplant program at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas\, Wall Street Journal Reporter McCartney has produced a book heavy on insider talk and breathless\, high octane accounts of complex and expensive transplant surgery. Spices with gossipy anecdotes of the program and the polo-playing Swedish surgeon in charge of it\, McCartney’s account tries to bring to focus the many conflicting issues facing this ever-changing and controversial field. Starting in 2015\, Parks for Downtown Dallas has overseen the development and completion of four urban neighborhood parks downtown\, comprising half of the 23 acres of new parks constructed in downtown Dallas since 2004. \nDecherd has participated in Dallas civic affairs for more than four decades\, with an emphasis on the arts\, medicine\, education and inclusiveness\, and a leading role in city and urban planning matters. He has chaired or helped organize numerous civic initiatives promoting city and urban planning\, including the creation of The Dallas Plan in 1991 and three concurrent planning efforts from 2002-2005 that resulted in a comprehensive physical plan for the center city and the first-ever master plan for downtown Dallas parks. \nDecherd has served on the board of Kimberly-Clark Corporation since 1996. He currently chairs the board’s nominating and corporate governance committee\, having previously served as lead director and chair of the audit committee. He has also served on the board of visitors of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and the advisory committee for the Center for Ethics at Harvard University.

SUMMARY:Innovations in Cardiac Valve Disease
DESCRIPTION:An overview of the scope and natural history of aortic valvular stenosis\, followed by the development of transcatheter valve devices\, contemporary results\, and new developments to transcatheter therapeutics including mitral and tricuspid valvular diseases. \nA native of St. Louis\, Missouri\, Dr. Hebeler attended college and medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans. Despite this\, he finished his General Surgery residency at UT Houston and completed his training in cardiothoracic surgery at Emory University in Atlanta. He has been in private practice since 1984 at Baylor University Medical Center and other metroplex hospitals. He has specialized in structural heart disease and was the first surgeon in Texas to use the DaVinci Robotic system to repair mitral valves and initiated surgical MAZE operation to ablate atrial fibrillation in Dallas. His focus on minimally invasive approaches and investigative trials helped to pioneer the first national trials of TAVR with the Medtronic CoreValve. This has led to participation in multiple clinical trials with 4 different devices as well as expansion into transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve repair. DESCRIPTION:Bob Mennel grew up in Trenton New Jersey and went to high school\, college\, and medical school in Philadelphia. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1970 he spent four years in Rochester New York\, pursuing training in internal medicine. After finishing his residency\, he spent two years in the navy at Portsmouth Naval Hospital during the Vietnam war. From 1976 to 79 he was a fellow in the department of oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He spent one year on the faculty at Hopkins before coming to Baylor University Medical Center in 1979. He has been at Baylor since 1979 where he has been practicing medical oncology and involved in the teaching of nurses\, medical students\, residents\, and fellows. He is also Medical Director of the Baylor Precision Medicine Institute. \nPhysicians have always attempted to use the best science to develop the best treatment programs for their patients. However\, the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953 by Watson and Crick opened a whole new area of medical research. This has led to an explosion of information and amazing scientific discoveries that have resulted in treatments for patients\, that physicians before this time could have imagined only in their wildest dreams. DESCRIPTION:Presentation overview:\nNeurodegenerative tauopathies\, such as Alzheimer’s disease\, are a growing health concern. These disorders are defined by accumulation of highly ordered tau aggregates. They characteristically progress through the brain\, causing patterns of neurodegeneration that correlate with known neuronal connections. These observations are consistent with a transmissible factor that propagates neuropathology. The Diamond lab was the first to propose that tau functions as a prion\, i.e. an infectious protein\, in this regard. Over the last 20 years this idea has been tested in vitro\, in cells\, and in animal models. Like the prion protein\, tau forms diverse\, self-replicating assemblies (termed strains)\, which transmit defined patterns of pathology between cells\, and function as transmissible infectious agents in mouse models. The Diamond lab has developed highly sensitive “biosensor” cell lines to dissect fundamental aspects of tau pathology: how “infectious” assemblies bind the cell surface\, enter the cytoplasm\, and how molecular machines enable pathological tau replication. By modeling basic disease processes in very simple systems it has been possible to gain insights that are enabling new approaches to diagnosis and therapy. This includes the use of antibodies as therapeutic agents for Alzheimer’s\, which are currently in trials\, and other approaches based on protein engineering to target pathological tau for detection and degradation. Based on these ideas\, the future will bring multiple new approaches to diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s and related disorders. \nBiosketch:\nMarc Diamond\, M.D.\, holds the Distinguished Chair of Brain injury and repair at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Since 2014 he has been the founding director of the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases (CAND)\, a multidisciplinary translational research program focused on mechanism-based diagnosis and therapy. The CAND is part of the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and exemplifies its ideal of uniting scientists with diverse interests around the common goal of curing brain disorders. \nDr. Diamond has made original discoveries linking common disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease to rare infectious prion disorders such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This has transformed the scientific community’s understanding of why neurogenerative diseases progress\, and how different diseases arise. His lab has discovered that abnormal assemblies of the tau protein move between cells and serve as templates for their own replication. Diamond’s ideas have formed the basis of new therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer’s and related disorders. He holds multiple patents and is the inventor of a monoclonal antibody that is currently in clinical trials. \nIn 1987 Diamond received an A.B. in history from Princeton University\, and then entered the UCSF School of Medicine\, where he received his M.D. from UCSF in 1993. He completed residency training in Neurology in 1997\, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He trained with Keith Yamamoto\, Ph.D. as a Howard Hughes Medical Student Research Fellow (1989-1991) and as a postdoctoral fellow (1997-2001) at UCSF. Dr. Diamond was a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at UCSF from 2002-2009\, before moving to Washington University in St. Louis in 2009\, as the David Clayson Professor of Neurology. From 2014 to the present he has been a professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at UT Southwestern Medical Center. \nDr. Diamond is an internationally recognized expert on fundamental mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease and lectures frequently at major universities and scientific meetings around the world. DESCRIPTION:Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Robert W. Haley\, Director of the Division of Epidemiology\, UT Southwestern Medical Center\, and DCMS President and Internal Medical physician Dr. Beth Kassanoff will bring us the newest on the pandemic and what we can possibly expect around the corner! After giving an overview of the pathogenesis and history of Covid-19 and the emergence of variants including Delta\, Dr. Haley will address current epidemiologic trends and projections. Vaccine efficacy and acceptance\, recommendations for personal protection and speculation on the future of coronavirus pandemics all will be covered. We will hear about the impact of COVID-19 on our community and the important role our Dallas County Medical Society plays during the pandemic from Dr. Kassanoff- Piper\, a physician who knows it first hand. \nA dinner buffet evening with these two extraordinary individuals\, celebrated physicians and over-achievers will be a remarkable opportunity. Their biographies are amazing. We urge you to go online to see the full pictures\, but just a snatch is here: \nDr Kassanoff was a much honored student including selection as the Outstanding Female Graduate in the State of Louisiana by the American Association of University Women and was the recipient of the Ho Din Award at UT Southwestern in 1996. She has practiced\nin Dallas for over twenty years and is a founding partner of North Texas Health Partners. She and her husband Mick Piper have six children\, three of them triplets. All that and practicing medicine as a leader in the medical community locally and state-wide. \nWe have written of Dr. Haley before in our newsletters and on our new website. His accomplishments are many as a professor and researcher at UT Southwestern and as\na leader in organized medicine. One of his more recent honors was the inaugural TMA award for Public Health\, citing his effective advocacy for clean air\, his speaking out\nabout health threats posed by climate change\, his leadership work during the West\nNile epidemic\, and his discovery of the cause of the Gulf War syndrome. He and his wife Stephanie have two sons\, who are both Dallas physicians\, a daughter\, who is a PhD psychologist holding positions as a counselor and associate professor at UT Southwestern\, and six grandchildren. \nLimited seating. Kratz is the Ignacy and Celina Rockover Professor of Humanities and Director\nof the Center for Asian Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas\, where he served as\nDean of the School of Arts and Humanities from 1997-2019. His scholarship and\nteaching focuses on the reception and transformation of ideas\, concepts and practices\ninherited from Greek and Roman Antiquity.\nProgram\nThis lecture explores the mutually beneficial relationship of Medicine and the Humanities\nin Western Culture. It begins with the birth of three interconnected fields of inquiry –\nscience\, medicine and philosophy – in Greek Antiquity. It then examines the continuing\nbenefits to Humanity of their marriage and the dangerous implications of their separation.\nThe three Greek words are philotechnia (love of the craft)\, philosophia (love of wisdom)\nand philanthropia (love of humankind). Indeed\, this Triad of Affection – for practical\nknowledge\, a meaningful life\, and other people – serves as a model for every human\nendeavor.
